What Does an Online Personal Trainer Actually Cost in Africa?

A breakdown of online personal training pricing in Kenya and South Africa — what's included, what to ask, and how it compares to in-person coaching.

Online personal training is the fastest-growing slice of the African fitness market — and for good reason. A working professional in Nairobi or Cape Town can get a real coach for less than half the price of weekly in-person sessions. Here's what to actually pay, what to expect, and where it goes wrong.

Typical online coaching prices on MojaFit

  • Kenya: KES 6,000–18,000/month for monthly programming with weekly check-ins.
  • South Africa: ZAR 1,000–3,500/month for the same.
  • Premium tier (KES 20k+ / ZAR 4k+/month): daily messaging, video form review on every session, monthly live calls, nutrition tracking.

What should be included

A solid online coaching package includes:

  • An onboarding call (30–45 min) to understand goals, history, equipment, schedule.
  • A written, week-by-week programme in an app or PDF you can actually follow.
  • Weekly check-ins — usually a short questionnaire on how sessions went, energy, sleep.
  • Form-check video on key lifts when you ask for it.
  • Programme adjustments every 2–4 weeks. If your coach sets and forgets, you're being underpaid attention.

Online vs in-person — when does each win?

Online wins when: your schedule is unpredictable, you live outside major cities, you're disciplined enough to do the sessions unsupervised, or you have a tight budget.

In-person wins when: you're learning a technical lift (squat, bench, deadlift, snatch), you need accountability to even show up, or you're working through injury where hands-on cueing matters.

The best setup for many people is 1 in-person session per week + online programming for the other 2–3.

Red flags to watch for

  • Coaches who recycle the same Excel template for every client.
  • No video calls included even at the premium tier.
  • Vague reply times — "I'll get back to you when I can".
  • 12-month upfront payment with no proration. A monthly contract you can cancel is fine.
  • Promises like "lose 10 kg in 30 days". This is a marketing red flag, not a coaching one.

How payment works

On MojaFit, Kenyan clients pay with M-Pesa or card via Paystack; South African clients pay by card. You get an invoice and your coach receives their share automatically. No back-and-forth on STK push.
